  Adult Programs



Iconic showman extraordinaire, motivational lecturer, best-selling author, public servant - P.T. Barnum lives again to celebrate the bicentennial year of his birth by sharing the secrets of his immense success and some wonderful stories of world-famous scams, including his own.

The program is distilled from actual lectures delivered and books written by P.T. Barnum and includes a "beautiful baby (picture) contest"; the very kind Barnum used to promote his exhibitions. Bring a baby picture to enter!

Come and meet Nelson Lufafa, director of the Save the Aids Orphans orphanage in Uganda. Find out small and practical ways you and your family can make a difference in the lives of children in Africa. Refreshments will be served.



White Bear Read aims to promote reading and community togetherness through a variety of activities including book discussions, a student film festival, author appearances, guest speaker presentations and more.

Three titles have been chosen for this program including Tales of the Road: Highway 61 by Cathy Wurzer, Winter War by William Durbin for the elementary-aged reader and Memory Boy by Will Weaver for middle school children.

Come and hear Minnesota author William Durbin talk about what motivated him to become a writer. His newest book, Winter War, is set in the fall of 1939, when the Soviet Union invaded Finland. Be inspired by this tale of overcoming a disability and the politics of war. Lake Country Booksellers will sell copies of this book at the program.





Cara Black, San Francisco native, presents Murder in the Palais Royal. This is the tenth book in Black's Parisian crime series starring P.I. Aimée Leduc.

In Murder In The Palais Royal, Aimée's business partner, René, has been shot, and eyewitnesses have identified Aimee as the culprit. Two murders ensue.

Community Cinema pairs independent films with lively panel discussions featuring local experts and community leaders and is moderated by hosts from Twin Cities Public Television.

Dirt - The Movie: Inspired by William Bryant Logan's acclaimed book Dirt: The Ecstatic Skin of the Earth, find out how industrial farming, mining and urban development have led us toward cataclysmic droughts, starvation, floods and climate change. Dirt is a part of everything we eat, drink and breathe. Which is why we should stop treating it like, well... dirt.

Mr. Weaver lives in Northern Minnesota, a region he writes from and loves. He is an avid outdoorsman, and enjoys hunting, fishing, canoeing and hiking with his family and friends.

Memory Boy (2001) is set in July 2008, and the Newell family, consisting of jazz drummer father, feisty mother, and teens Miles and Sarah, leave suburban Minneapolis to escape to the safety and isolation of their summer cabin. A poignant subplot involving Miles' oral history project provides the key to the family's survival. Lake Country Booksellers will sell copies of this book at the program.



Join us in our second annual "Earth Day Landscape Rejuvenation" efforts as we clean and restore the grounds surrounding the library in Mounds View.

Come in your work clothes and bring gardening tools if you've got them. We'll provide the treats and beverages!





Are you being harassed by debt collectors? Has a lawsuit or a judgment been filed against you by a debt collector? Are your wages or bank accounts being garnished even though you receive public assistance? This Law Clinic is available to help community members who are experiencing these problems.

Attendees will receive brief legal services, including the chance to speak with an attorney and assistance in filling out appropriate legal forms. Registration information for the Clinic will be available mid-March.



Experience a Victorian poetry slam with costumed actors Craig Johnson, Laura Salveson and Ann Daly from the James J Hill House. They perform a wide range of beloved, 19th-century poems by Dickinson, Poe, Longfellow, Browning and others dealing with love, romance, temperance, sports and war.

The Library's ninth annual poetry slam will be held on Saturday, May 1.

This year's theme is art and culture. In honor of the Legacy Amendment, which has provided Ramsey County Library with funding for arts and cultural programming, write a poem about an artform that inspires you, a tradition passed along in your culture or anything related.

Contestants will perform their original poetry and will be judged by members from the community. Prizes will be awarded.

This mother-daughter team introduces their fourth book, Shoot to Thrill. Come and hear how Grace McBride's Monkeewrench crew has been recruited by the FBI to investigate a series of murder videos posted on the Web.

Books will be available for purchase at the event.

  Teen Programs


Come to the library to watch new Anime movies and eat lots of popcorn. We'll watch the movie you vote for! Anime movies will play the third Monday of each month at the library in Mounds View.



Youth ages 10 to 17 are invited to come meet characters from Comic Books!

Prizes, goodie bags, caricatures, hot dogs, video games and more are featured at this club that is all about heroes, story telling, imagination and reading. Call 651-747-2411 for more information. Sponsored by The Source Comic Book Club.





Learn the art of spoken word from Latisha "Tish" Jones, a spoken word artist, activist, educator and organizer. Jones will teach you the creative tools and skills needed to create great work and will also talk about local opportunities to perform. Presented by Intermedia Arts. Registration required.

  Computer Classes

Ramsey County Library is pleased to offer basic computer courses to those who have little or no experience. You are welcome to attend all workshops in a series or pick and choose depending on your skill level. Participants wanting to take the e-mail or Internet courses must be mouse-proficient.

Beginning Digital Camera - Set your settings, learn your functions and see what "modes" really do. Bring your camera, fresh batteries, a memory card and your owner's manual.

Digital Camera II: Upload Your Photos - Upload photos to the free photo-sharing Web site Snapfish.com. Bring your camera, a memory card with photos on it, fresh batteries, your owner's manual and all the cords that came with your camera. A valid e-mail account is required.

Your MP3 Player and Audiobooks - Learn how to find, download and transfer audiobooks to your MP3 player from the Library's audio eBooks collection.

Mastering the Mouse - If you have never used a mouse before, this course will introduce you to three basic skills: pointing, clicking and scrolling. Click here for the "Mousing Around" tutorial.

Introduction to E-mail - Electronic mail is a great way to stay in touch with friends and family, wherever they are! Come and learn the basics of setting up a free Yahoo! e-mail account and sending and receiving e-mail.

Internet Basics - A basic introduction to the Internet in a relaxed, supportive environment. Individuals will learn how to access the Internet, navigate within web sites and find information using a search engine.

Internet Searching: Beyond the Basics - Add to your Internet searching skills. Learn ways to make your search more specific and be trained on spotting which web sites give reliable information.

Explore the Library's Web site - Take a tour of Ramsey County Library's Web site. Learn how to search the library catalog and access your account from home. You will also be introduced to the many resources and databases available to you from the Library's Web site.

Google: More Than a Search Engine - Learn to use Google to search the Web for images, news, maps, books, language translation and more!

Beginning eBay - This class will teach you the basics on how to search, buy and sell items, how to evaluate sellers and explain methods of payment using eBay.

Managing Your Yahoo! Mail - Come and learn to attach files, create folders, manage your address book and more! Prerequisites: Intro to E-mail or must have a Yahoo! E-mail account

Social Networking: Facebook 101 - Facebook combines the best of blogs, online forums, and pictures and connects people with others who work, study and live around them. All that's needed is a valid E-mail account to get started. If you have a wireless laptop, feel free to bring it to class.

Genealogy on the Web - This class provides an introduction to Ancestry.com--the Library edition. Ancestry is a starting point for people searching online for genealogy information. Other useful online and print resources will be highlighted.

Ramsey County Library is pleased to offer a new series of workshops designed to help job seekers. Come to the library and learn new skills for finding job openings, applying for jobs in the new economy, and updating your resume to help you land an interview.

Ramsey County Library is partnering with Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota and Workforce Solutions to offer the following classes to assist job seekers:

The library is a great place to get started with your job search. Learn about valuable resources for job seekers on the Library's Web site, and strategies for finding job openings and applying for jobs online.



When applying for jobs, you need to make sure your resume stands out from all the rest. This class will help you improve your skills in writing a resume and cover letter, and offer tips and ideas for customizing your resume and cover letter for a specific job opening.



The library is a great place to get started with your job search. Learn about valuable resources for job seekers on the Library's Web site, and strategies for finding job openings and applying for jobs online.



Have you recently lost your job, or have you been out of the job market for a while? This class will offer practical job search strategies geared toward older workers and those who are re-entering the workforce.



The job market has changed dramatically in the last few years. The process of looking for a job, from finding job openings to getting hired, can be challenging. This class will offer tips for your job search, as well as strategies to help you stay employed in the current economy.
